Second-Order Josephson Effect in Excitonic Insulators

چکیده

We show that in electron-hole bilayers with excitonic order arising from conduction and valence bands formed by atomic orbitals have different parities, nonzero interlayer tunneling leads to a second Josephson effect. This means the electrical current is related phase of parameter as $J = J_c \sin2\theta$ instead \sin \theta$, system has two degenerate ground states at $\theta=0, \pi$ can be switched an voltage pulse. When generalized three dimensional stack alternating planes or chains, AC effect implies electric field pulses perpendicular layers chains steer between states, making these devices ultrafast memories. The steering also applies insulator candidate Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$.

Excitonic Josephson effect in double-layer graphene junctions

We show that double-layer graphene (DLG), where an external potential induces a charge imbalance between nand p-type layers, is a promising candidate to realize an exciton condensate in equilibrium. To prove this phenomenon experimentally, we suggest coupling two DLG systems, separated by a thin insulating barrier, and measuring the excitonic Josephson effect. For this purpose we calculate the ...

Fractional Solitons in Excitonic Josephson Junctions

The Josephson effect is especially appealing to physicists because it reveals macroscopically the quantum order and phase. In excitonic bilayers the effect is even subtler due to the counterflow of supercurrent as well as the tunneling between layers (interlayer tunneling). Here we study, in a quantum Hall bilayer, the excitonic Josephson junction: a conjunct of two exciton condensates with a r...

Reflection-Symmetric Second-Order Topological Insulators and Superconductors.

Second-order topological insulators are crystalline insulators with a gapped bulk and gapped crystalline boundaries, but with topologically protected gapless states at the intersection of two boundaries. Without further spatial symmetries, five of the ten Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes allow for the existence of such second-order topological insulators in two and three dimensions. We show t...

Electron linewidths of wide-gap insulators: Excitonic effects in LiF

Based on a recent exchange-correlation kernel developed within time-dependent-density-functional theory we derive a practical and general expression for the three-point vertex function. We show that excitonic effects in LiF strongly modifies the low-energy electron linewidths leading to linear scaling with quasiparticle energy. We also prove that, in contrast to previous results for the electro...
